Reflection Journal (PETA) : Formative, Summative & Diagnostic Assessment


At the meeting on last Friday on 03th of Desember 2010, I studied the materials on the assessment in PETA class. Before starting the lesson, our lecture gave us two examples of cases that provoke our thinking. The first is regarding the case of a teacher named Nancy who evaluated students with a variety of ways. She understood that it turns out that assessment can not be viewed from one side. It originated from the changing way of assessing pupils until eventually she knew that her students have different abilities. The second part is about “the purpose of the assessment itself.” In this case, a math teacher did various ways for assessing her students’ ability. It’s purposed in order to make the students really understand about the material of fraction that she have been given. So what is the mean of assessment itself?
Based on my understanding about my lecture explanation, assessment is the way to gain some information about our students’ ability or capability on materials that we have delivered to them. It is easy to understand about it, because I have learned this material before in my LTM class. There are kinds of assessment, formative assessment, summative assessment and diagnostic assessment. Here the brief explanation of it:
-       Formative assessment is the type of assessment that is done during teaching and learning process.
-       Summative assessment is the type of assessment that is done in the end of teaching and learning process.
-       Diagnostic assessment is the type of assessment that is done before teaching and learning process begins.
Which one is important for assess our students? Of course all is important. As the teacher we should combine all the types in the order to make it perfect. But I though we also have to apply it based on context, because we will meet our students with their each different ability, wont it? For example, our government set UAN as the main assessment to decide whether the students able to continue their education or not, whereas not every students are able in paper pencil test. So, when some of them failure to pass the test, can we blame the students? Of course not! It is not fair for them. UAN is a kind of summative assessment which is done in the end teaching-learning process. We can’t set it as the main assessment because it can not describe the overall students’ ability. I supposed formative learning is more appropriate and decisive to assess our students, because we do it during teaching-learning process.
So, I agreed with what my lecture have said about types of assessment. She illustrated the iceberg as it. The bottom part which the big one as formative learning and summative as the top one. Why the formative as the big one. As I have said before because it is more decisive to assess our student.
Ok, I think everything almost effective in this meeting. Maybe the numbers of student that came late including me is the only one problem. I hope I can apply what I have learned in this meeting to my students well.

Reflection Journal TLL - Final Project 2 (6th and 9th of Desember)

Today we have collected some resources about our material. We're also shooting a video for our learning video and searching a song that related to our topic "PAST TENSE" for listening session. We decided to use a song with the title "Because you loved me" by Celine Dion (Beautiful song). Then we're planning to used the song's lyrics as the task for our students. We'll ask students to listen the song and fill in the blank that provides in the lyrics part. After finishing the song's lyric we jump to our next task, editing the video. Hmm... But there's a little problem here. We didn't have any sofware to do that. So, we decided to continue our project tomorrow after we got the sofware.

Ohh ya.. I almost forget about the website that we use for our project. We use www.hpage.com actually. Its performance and also its  icons that are provided  in this site are look like a blog. But I think it's better that blog. Yeah, as I have tol you before, our project is still under constuction. We still learn about how to use our new website. So, just wait for it okayy ! hhahha ^__^

Reflection Journal (TLL) - Final Project 1 (2nd of Desember 2010)

Holaa... Holaa.. Holaa...



Today we arranged our final Project to make a website learning use WEB 2.0. I thougt it's very chalenge task to do. Why? Hmm... Because it's not easy to create a website that can make students interest to learn by using it. We should think what the material that we want to explain, how to make it easy to understand, how to create it interestingly in order to looks interest to visited by the students and so on. Okay " if we think it was difficult, it will be difficult". So our group just thinking it as an easy task, and it'll be easy for us. (hopefully) hehe.


We decided to divide the task to each group members. It's aimed to make our task become easy to finished. Every people in our group has each roles with each responsibility (of course). For example, editor that should edit our materials before it is uploaded, photographer, composer, uploader etc. After we knew about our each responsibilty, we did our first plan project. We hope our group can give the best in the end of this project. We named our website leraning as WOKAY LEARNING... hoho ^_^

Reflection Journal (TLL) - Wikies & Podcast (22th and 29th of November)

Wiki and Podcast


Pak Jeffry Sasmita came to our class as a guest lecturer. In the first meeting, he shared about wikies to our class. Pak Jeffry delivered all his knowledge about it to us. I thought this session is very interesting because I got a lot of new information about wiki itself. It's begun from the term definition of wiki, history, kinds of wiki, and the functions for each of wiki branchs. Wiki is good for our learning actually. Why? because it can help us in our teaching learning process. For example, wikipedia can help us to know about definition or history related to our lesson. In wiki we also could save our document, published some articles, created a blog, website and so on. I thought after our class today, I'll explore more about wiki at home in my rent house by myself of course. Hehe :) :) :)
Then in the second meeting Pak Jeffry also told us about podcast. I didn't really understand actually about it, but I tried to get own understanding by asking my friends. I suggest that podcast its good for listening session in language learning, because it consist with sound. Hmm.. But maybe it's also good for speaking. Why? Because maybe after we listened to the sound (hear), we also can speak ang try how to pronounce it well. hehe.. It's just my oppinion. ^_^ But over all... I like this class.

Reflection Journal (PETA) : Observation Task 2

(Teaching Assistant Week 2)
In the second weeks of my school observation program, I did teaching practice in the class. I taught my student based on my lesson plan that I have made before. I showed my best for my performance in front of the class. I got a lot of input from my master teacher about my method when I taught my students. She told me that there are some effective and ineffective way during I did teaching practice.
There are the effective ways that I have done in the classroom.
I opened my class with ice breaking such as, greeting, introduction, and game. Honestly, I felt nervous for my first class. But I tried to make the class condition comfort by doing something. Firstly, we introduced each other then I gave them post-it and asked them to write their name there. Then they stick it in their chest. I thought its effective, because in can make we became closer to each other. After the classroom became comfort and friendly, I tried to ask them question about the previous lesson (narrative text). So, there is communication between us. Secondly, I explained the material to remain students about the lesson. Then ask them to read the narrative text in form video and answer some questions according to the text. We choose to show the text in form of video is because to make it more interesting to read by the students. I hope it can improve students’ interest to learn English. Why, I said this way is effective? After listen to my explanation, I would the student do practice directly based on their understanding.  So it’s mean that student not only understand but also can produce something (their own text) in the real life. Thirdly, when the students did their task, I went around the class to check the students work and make sure that they have understood about my explanation. I ask student one by one, and did lecture-discussion with them. I thought it’s also effective, because we can make sure whether the student understand or not about the lesson. Beside that we can help them by ask about the difficulties one by one and then gave them the solution. Then the last, I always give them reward like praises or applause for give them intrinsic motivation.
There are the ineffective ways that I have done in the classroom:
 There are some things that ineffective and I should to fix it. Some student said that I explained the lesson too fast. It makes them rather confuse. So I should teach more slowly and leisurely. Then, because I am the beginner, I still do know how to manage my class well. Sometime students didn’t pay the attention to my explanation. According to this condition, I’ll learn more how to manage our class well and make them focus about the lesson. The last is time management. Although I have arranged the lesson plan well, it doesn’t work as well as I hope in the real live. I find difficulty when I try to match the time of learning based on my lesson plan. Sometimes it’s more than our prediction. Finally I lack the time to teach my students.
Ok that’s all about my experience during the second week. I hope I can be better and better. I’ll do my best in the future as the teacher. I will fix some mistaken that I have did in my first teaching practice. I wish I can decrease the ineffective thing and increase the effective thing. Amiin! J

Reflection Journal (PETA) : Observation Task 1

My Reflection for the first week
(Teaching Assistant)
I have done my job as the teacher assistant as well as possible in Senior High School 54 , Jakarta.  In the first week, I found many interesting thing there. I observed about the effective & ineffective teaching & learning in the classroom actually. I did my observation n 3rd grade of saint’s class. Well, I did it and i got many new things that is very useful for me as the prospective teacher in the future. I will explain about everything that I have observed one by one in this reflection. I'll tell the effective way first and then the ineffective.
For the effective teaching and learning process in the class room:
Firstly, Teacher could manage the classroom well. I thought it’s the important key for the teacher in the order to make she teach her students well. By manage the classroom well, she could create a good atmosphere in the classroom, made her students comfort with that condition & enjoy the teaching-learning process in the classroom. She could control every student’s activities to do not too noisy when they learn & make them concentrate with her explanation. Finally, it impact to the student’s understanding. Students understood about the lesson easily.
Secondly, teachers always remind her students about the previous lesson and check their homework together before the new class begins. I though this way is effective to see and to measure the students’ understanding level about every subject. Teacher could know whether her student really understand or not with her explanation and also to ensure that the students be able to continue the next subject.
Thirdly, teacher gave the students some task to do after she explains about the lesson. This way was also effective I guest, because its purpose to make students could apply what they have learned from the explanation before directly.
For the ineffective teaching and learning process in the class room:
Firstly, the teacher used teacher centered learning method when she teaches her students. It made the students passive and not creative in the classroom. There was less communication between teacher and students or student and student. For example, asking-answer question session is less attention. The students just listen to the teacher’s explanation and do something based on their student instruction.
Secondly, the teacher always did the same way when she teaches her student. I mean that, there are not variations in her teaching method. So, sometimes it’s look monotone and boring.
Thirdly, the teacher doesn't have any markers to write the explanation on the white board. Maybe it looks like the simple thing  "'marker", but it could be the problem in teaching and learning process. For the visual students, some explanation in the whiteboard is important actually. I thought the teacher doesn't give attention for that case.
So, I thought that’s all the result for my first week. I hope I could learn more from the effective & also ineffective teaching-learning process in that class. As the prospective teacher I also want to apply the effective one and practice everything that I have learned from my PETA class. I want to be a good teacher and also the effective teacher. Hopefully I can teach my students well. Not only make them interested but also make them easy to understand about my explanation. Hopefully!

TLL Observation Task
In my school experience program for two weeks, I did my observation about the media that is use in language teaching.  I didn’t find any digital media during teaching and learning process occur in the classroom actually. The teacher only uses whiteboard and marker as the main media for teaching.  I thought, it not because that school didn’t have the facilities but because there is not any chance to use it maximally. In my school that I have observed, there is a projector in some classes, computers in some rooms, and also Internet network. But unfortunately that is not available in English class that I observed there. So, if the English teachers want to use the projector or computer with Internet connection, they should alternate with others teachers. That is why the using of digital media here is not too maximal.
Although the teacher only teach her students by using whiteboard , marker, and some books, the teaching-learning  process in that class room still effective. It happened because the teacher can use the media maximally to teach and deliver her knowledge to the students. She makes the materials easy to understand and still interesting. She used the books as her resource and explained it well by write it in the whiteboard. I thought, the lack of number of digital media in the classroom is not the big problem for the students there. Most of the students have had their own digital media at home.  The have learned about the materials by using their own digital media outside the school hours. It was evident when I asked all students to send their reflections via email.
Based of my experience during my observation, I got some ideas for my teaching method if I teach the same lesson in the same condition. Firstly, I will use the facilities that have already available as can as possible or I will teach my students with my own digital media that I have maximally. Secondly, I will use the books as the resources for the material that is related to the subject. But I also ask the students to get more resources from the Internet outside school hours. Thirdly, although the using of digital media is doesn’t work well in the school, I will invite the students for join online discussion such as using blogger, group in facebook, etc.  
I think that’s all for my reflection about the using of digital media in the classroom. I hope I can learn more from my observation that I have done. As the prospective teacher, it will be my provision for me to be better and better. Hopefully!

Reflection Journal (TLL) : Week 3 Mobile Phone & Mobile Learning

In this meeting, on 14th of October 2010, our topic is about mobile phone or hand phone and mobile learning. I think, It has became familiar for us, hasn't it?
Almost everyone has mobile phone, kids, teenager, adult, etc. But do they know about its functions? I think not too much, just a little bit.
Ok ! We are talking about mobile phone features now. Let's we observe it together ^_^

As we know, nowadays we can do everything easier with technology. Mobile phone is the one part of technology that is created to make communication process between people become easy. Not only for communicate but also mobile phone can be used in learning process actually. The way of learning that use mobile phone is called by Mobile Learning. This way is useful for the students to access their lesson by their phone. Student can access explanation of the material, question and exercise easily. In learning language, usually teacher may use this way to improve their students vocabulary, listening, spelling etc. Mobile learning has applied by some country in the world, for example in Canada, Indonesia, America etc. Ok, I'll share you more about mobile learning by watch the video.

Oh, I forgot to tell you a thing! When my lecturer Mr. Iwan asked us to observe the picture that we've made and compare it with the other students, I found a picture of that is storyline exactly same with my picture. It made me think that, sometimes other people have the same point of view with us. So, why should we be afraid to express our thoughts?

Back to the course, TLL. I think learning about the technology will help me as a prospective teacher in the future. I know a lot of influence from technology, either positive or negative influence. I can understand how to maximize the use of technology in terms of positive and how to minimize the adverse effects from the use of technology. I hope, I can get more knowledge longer by following this lesson.

Reflection Journal (TLL) : Week 2





Nowadays, technology is become our best friend in our daily life. it always help everyone when we do everything. I think all difficult things became easier with technology. But as we know, nothing the perfect thing in this word. Everything have superiority and weakness and so does about technology.


In this meeting, we discussed about advantage & disadvantage from technology. We emphasized it in teaching-learning process especially. We worked in the groups & do debated about this case. I think everything that we have done are very effective for us. We can understand the course easier because we share it to each other. As the teacher candidates it also help us to know more about how to use technology and how to prevent the negative effects from it.

Reflection Journal (PETA) : Week 2.


In our meeting on Monday,04 October 2010, we discuss about planing for construction. We learn about design contraction, understanding by design. There are three , stages of backwards design, they are identify desired result, determine acceptable evidence, & plan learning experience. In the opening of this course, my lecture ask us to watch a video related with our course. After that she gave us some question about what the difference between interesting learning and effective learning and share each other. I think the question is good to engage our critical thinking, because it make us understand easier about that course. Finally, we conclude that interesting learning is not always makes our student understand, but effective learning can make student understand and we can make it be interesting learning.
Then, to examine our understanding more about PETA, we work in the group. We make something like lesson plan for teaching based on the curriculum competence that we have read. We imagine that we are the teacher, and try to make the goals & assess our students. I think this way is very effective for us, because beside we can know by the theory & we practice our understanding directly.
In the end the end of this course we get a lot of knowledge. We we understand our due as the teacher candidates. How to know about our student's ability, how to assess them, how to make them understand etc. I think every think that we have done today is very effective.

Reflection Journal (LTM) : Communicative Approach - Language Teaching Method

In this teaching and learning process, teachers are required to understand how students learn in the class, because every student has different learning styles to understand the lesson. This case is based on the multiple intelligent’s theory. Communicative approach is one of the strategies undertaken to address the situation. This study emphasizes the existence of the communication process between teacher- students and students-students. It is intended to make teacher or student can find an effective way of learning during the process of learning and teaching take place. Students are also more easily understand the lesson and the teacher becomes easier to convey the material. How to learn to like this usually requires active student in the classroom, or often known as the students center learning.
